Ray Pottie is a Cape Bretoner who worked as a diamond driller in mines across Canada. He has a neck injury, fibromyalgia, white finger disease, and arthritis. He can no longer work or do anything physically demanding. He can't walk his dog, Lobo, and has to tape his favourite TV shows because he can't sit through a whole show in real time.
