Recorded on March 11, 2019 - How can a survivor of intimate partner violence make the most of the working relationship with their lawyer in a family law case? How can misunderstanding and further trauma be avoided? This webinar will discuss best practices for an effective and efficient lawyer-client working relationship, and what survivor clients can and should reasonably expect and ask from their lawyers. This new webinar from the Family Law Education for Women (FLEW) project, is presented by Tamar Witelson, Legal Director at METRAC, and Kerry K. Gearin, Family, Child Abduction & Child Safety Lawyer.

About the presenters

Kerry Gearin is an expert in family, child abduction, and child safety law, and has been representing Ontario clients in family law cases for almost 20 years. Before becoming a lawyer, Kerry helped community members involved in legal matters to find government and social services and started a volunteer group called “Abused Women’s Advocate”. As a lawyer, Kerry is known for her holistic approach in connecting clients with support services and experts, to help in their family life as well as their family law cases.

Tamar Witelson is the Legal Director of METRAC’s Community Justice Program, which provides legal education and information related to women’s rights, equality and access to justice, in areas of family, immigration, criminal, employment and human rights law, with a focus on the diverse ways in which women may experience abuse and violence. Tamar’s background includes practice in labour, human rights, and Constitutional law, and a career in television journalism before becoming a lawyer.
