On the Radar: Changes to Employment Insurance benefits for new parents

Recent changes to Employment Insurance (EI) mean that women can start their maternity benefits sooner. And all new parents can choose to get parental benefits at a lower rate but for a longer time.

This month's On the Radar has details about these changes.

Changes to maternity benefits

Women can now start collecting maternity benefits as early as 12 weeks before their due date. Under the old rules, the earliest a woman could start collecting benefits was 6 weeks before her due date.

Maternity benefits are for women who take time off work because they're pregnant or recently gave birth. These are sometimes called pregnancy benefits.
