May 8: Community Forum: Whose rights? Which rights? A community forum on school safety
This forum is presented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Foundation, District 12, Human Rights Committee.
From zero tolerance [Mike Harris] to safe & caring schools [Dalton McGuinty], experts and governments, students, teachers and administrators, and even the police, have struggled over the intersection of safety and human rights in our schools. How far have we come since the shooting of Jordan Manners in May 2007? Have the recommendations of the Falconer Report, published in January 2008, been acted upon?
Are our students and education workers safe? Are school practices equitable? Do we need police in our schools? Do suspensions and expulsions serve a purpose? Who is being served? Who is at risk?
The District 12 OSSTF Human Rights Committee proposes to bring a variety of perspectives to these important questions: students and parent advocates; teachers; employer and union reps; police, academic and legal experts.
Confirmed presenters include:
Julian Falconer (Falconer Charney LLP, author of Falconer Report)
Jim Spyropoulos (TDSB)
Kelly Gallagher-Mackay (People for Education)
Doug Jolliffe (OSSTF District 12)
Audrey Macklin (UT Faculty of Law, immigration & refugee rights)
