Sign of changing times
From a Belleville Intelligencer article:
Quinte's pre-eminent legal services agency is beefing up its efforts to provide improved services to the local deaf and linguistic communities, particularly those living in rural areas.
The multi-county project led by the The Community Advocacy and Legal Clinic (CALC) was driven by complaints from the deaf community and non English and French speakers about hurdles blocking their access to legal services.
The CALC is set to launch a report on March 14 which will detail a number of concerns and recommendations to curtail the ongoing problems.
For the past nine months the clinic has been spearheading a five-county legal literacy and access to justice study dubbed "Paths to Justice: Navigating with the wondering lost."
CALC's executive director, Michele Leering, said the study will also be submitted to the Law Foundation of Ontario as part of the clinic's bid to obtain funding to hire a co-ordinator to lead the charge.
