Street Health offers ID Safe program
Street Health offers assistance with the retention and retrieval of personal identification documents. Street health is located at 338 Dundas Street East.
This service provides an accessible and safe site for identification storage for individuals who are homeless or marginally housed. Other supports are also provided by ID Safe such as assisting individuals in replacing their identification, and making referrals to other services. ID Safe issues a photo membership card for its members with information on where their identification is stored.
ID Safe is working in consultation with government departments and agencies providing services to people who are homeless to develop protocols for replacing and verifying identification. In addition, a parallel process is occurring with key government representatives responsible for issuing identification, to assess the barriers of replacing and verifying identification. It is hoped that the protocols will help reduce the barriers and obstacles that marginalized people face when they try to access their identification through mainstream procedures.
A coalition of agencies is currently working on gathering details of cases where individuals indicate that their identification has gone missing when they are incarcerated or in contact with police.
